I'm Julia Nowland.
When couples, families or individuals first come to see me, they’re usually struggling with feelings of frustration, anger and resentment. They’re stuck in a rut with their loved one and can’t seem to break or change old patterns of behaviour. Sometimes it’s a last ditch effort to save the relationship from falling apart altogether.
They tell me things like:
We don’t talk about anything it’s like we’re living separate lives
I’m the only one who does anything around the house
We’re constantly fighting about money
We never have sex anymore she just pushes me away
Our daughter is rude and argumentative and it’s affecting the whole family
I think my son is using drugs but when I try to talk to him about it he just walks away
People who work with me very quickly discover it’s not about laying blame or finding fault. It's about how we relate to one another, why we relate the way we do, and more importantly, what we can do to improve the quality of the relationship.
With a focus on the mechanics of the relationship I look at how it works, the patterns and the dynamics that are occurring between the couple or the family members.
The problem is the problem - the person is not the problem.

Since 2008 I have had the privilege of helping countless couples, parents and adolescents with a range of mental health, drug, alcohol and relationship issues
And here are a few more random facts about me….
Always the curious child in the family, and never short of something to say, I grew up forever asking the challenging question of ‘why?’ This curiosity coupled with a desire for self-awareness has led to years of learning, growing, challenging, discovering and understanding myself.
I have a deep love and respect for stories, I’m never happier than when I’m curled up with a good book and a cuppa.
Did I mention I love a good coffee?
Yoga is my go to self-care practise. Often I have walked into an early morning class feeling grouchy and walked out wide-eyed and fresh. Early morning classes will do that to you!
Being a therapist does not automatically mean I can “pass go”. Just as a personal trainer needs to work at staying fit, I too need to ‘do the work’ to maintain the level of health I have in my own relationships.
I’m rather fond of walking and hiking and have even finished a couple of endurance events. The first one I ever did was a 50 km team challenge in the Blue Mountains. Despite the pain, miserable weather, and difficult conditions, I had the time of my life and learnt the true capacity of my own mental strength and resilience.
If I weren’t a therapist….I’d be working in community development. I’m passionate about giving a voice to those who don’t have one, building stronger connections and evolving beyond services.
